Of Montreal’s Paralytic Stalks is Really Weird. We Like It That Way.

There are so many things happening on the Of Montreal album Paralytic Stalks, so many horns and strings and layered harmonies swirling replica tag heuer watchestogether at the same time — not to mention the whirs, beeps and chimes whose sources you might not be able to place — that it’ll leave you with a feeling akin to waking from a particularly bizarre dream. Take for example, the album’s fourth track, “We Will Commit Wolf Murder.” The off kilter, synth-heavy pop song doesn’t have a chorus, but is instead tied together by one line repeated across several verses by Of Montreal lead singer Kevin Barnes. “There’s blood in my hair,” he sings — almost happily, it seems — but never explains why it’s there or whose veins it came from. Go on, just tell me you haven’t ever had a nightmare like that before.
But, like a dream, Of Montreal’s experimental weirdness is grounded in a reality we recognize. Barnes has released an album nearly every year — never going more than two — since Of Montreal’s 1997 debut, Cherry Peel. Back then, Of Montreal was mostly a solo project, and Barnes worked in a traditional 1960s-inspired pop-rock vein similar to his Elephant 6 companions Apples in Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control. (Elephant 6 was a collection of likeminded, likesounded indie rock bands based in Denver and Athens, Georgia in the 1990s—Barnes wasn’t a founding member but he was associated with them). But over time, he slowly traded in his 2- and 3-minute Beatle-esque pop melodies for long, experimental soundscapes woven together with the help of computers. A lot of computers. That’s why Barnes expands his musical project to include dozens of multi-instrumentalists during concerts — there’s no way one man could perform this psychedelic carnival on his own.
Barnes used to write and record his albums alone at his home studio in Athens, but on his last effort, 2010’s False Priest, he employed an outside producer, Jon Brion, as well as guest musicians and vocal performances from the likes of Janelle Monaé and Solange Knowles. The result was a funked out, genre-defying menagerie composed of 13 mostly danceable tracks that earned Barnes frequent comparisons to Prince and David Bowie.
Paralytic Stalks is equally eclectic — I can’t think of a contemporary music genre that isn’t featured here in some form or another — but the result is completely different. The album’s nine songs still have their catchy, danceable moments, but they’re often sandwiched between meandering, almost avant-garde compositions and ominous, atonal scores. The last half of Paralytic Stalks features a set of experimental suites that range between seven and 13 minutes long. Synthesizers, violins, and electric guitar create a cacophonous sound as Barnes varies his falsetto voice on double- and triple-tracked harmonies by changing his distance from the mic. The result is a frenetic, attention-starved album that, if it were a child, would almost certainly be put on Ritalin. Barnes’ lyrics are equally unhinged; in addition to the references to hair blood, they also mention exposed brains, parasites and the time Barnes slipped on his own vomit. But they’re not always discernible over the multi-instrumental clamor. It’s possible to listen to the entire record without any idea of what the songs are about.
If this sounds daunting to you, if you like your music short, quick and without references to viscera, then Paralytic Stalks might not be the album for you. Indeed, Barnes has said in interviews that he knows it’s “probably not something everybody’s going to like.” But that’s a shame, because the album offers up some truly fine music. For example, once you wade through a minute and 25 seconds of space age noises and random mutterings on the opening track “Gelid Ascent,” Barnes breaks out into a thrilling rock song that’s surprisingly reminiscent of Oasis’ early days. The first single, “Dour Percentage” is a psychedelic, disco dance song. It would fit easily on Hissing Fauna Are You the Destroyer?, Of Montreal’s 2007 album that perfectly mixed Barnes’ traditional rock-pop melodies with his then-new experimental tendencies. And “Wintered Debt” is a beautiful piece that begins as a quiet and subdued as a lullaby, layers on some elegant harmonies and then explodes into truly raucous baroque orchestral pop. But it only lasts for a little while; the last three minutes of the song are filled with something that sounds like a Twilight Zone score. In a sense, “Wintered Debt” operates as three different songs in one.
That’s the joy of Of Montreal’s increasing madness; the songs on Paralytic Stalks can be endlessly dissected into their various components or they can be experienced together as a convoluted picture of one man’s bizarre musical imagination. Barnes still writes the occasional Beatle-esque melody. But these days, he may be more interested in “Revolution 9.”coach outlet online

Venezuela’s opposition picks Chavez’s challenger

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) C Youthful state governor Henrique Capriles won Venezuela’s first-ever opposition primary vote by a wide margin on Sunday, emerging as the single candidate who will try to end President Hugo Chavez’s 13 years in power.
Capriles, the 39-year-old governor of Miranda state, faces a tough task in ousting Chavez, a charismatic campaigner with a loyal following and the full powers of the state to back his candidacy in Oct. 7 elections.
Opposition election chief Teresa Albanes announced the preliminary results, saying that Capriles won about 62 percent of the vote, beating Zulia state Gov. Pablo Perez by a margin of more than 30 percentage points.
Chavez’s opponents lined up to vote in many areas, surpassing most expectations with a turnout of about 2.9 million ballots cast out of Venezuela’s 18 million registered voters.
Capriles had been the front-runner in pre-election polls among five contenders, presenting a younger, energetic alternative to the 57-year-old Chavez, who has recently battled cancer.
“He’s going to be the candidate who can get us out of this giant hole we’re stuck in,” said Carmen Gloria Padilla, a 66-year-old telephone company employee who voted for him.
Hundreds of supporters celebrated the win outside Capriles’ campaign headquarters, holding small flags emblazoned with the slogan “There is a way.” Fireworks exploded in the sky above the crowd.
Some of Capriles’ supporters said they think he has a good chance of winning over Venezuelans who otherwise might lean pro-Chavez because he has taken a largely non-confrontational approach while promising solutions to problems including 26-percent inflation and one of the highest murder rates in Latin America.
Diego Prada, a 23-year-old marketing manager, said he thinks Capriles’ inclusive approach offers a much better shot against Chavez than other competitors who have taken a hard line against the president.
“People are tired of so much confrontation,” Prada said. As for Capriles, he said, “he has a message of unity.”
The once-divided opposition has gained popularity in recent years, and the race could end up being the toughest re-election bid of Chavez’s career.
The lefist president easily won re-election with 63 percent of the vote in 2006, but since then his popularity has declined, in part due to ills including crime and economic troubles.
Chavez’s approval ratings have topped 50 percent in recent polls, and his struggle last year with cancer doesn’t appear to have hurt his popularity. The president says he’s cancer-free after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy last year, and has been energetic in his hours-long television appearances, apparently trying to show he can still keep up with a younger challenger.
Chavez remains a hero to many of his supporters and maintains a visceral connection to a significant segment of the poor in Venezuela. He also will use the full powers of his government and a bonanza of public spending to try to ensure a victory in the Oct. 7 election.
Chavez has already kicked his campaign machinery into gear. He has increased government spending by launching new social programs that offer cash benefits for the poor and invested heavily in new railways, public housing and cable car systems in Venezuela’s sprawling hillside slums. As the election nears, he will inaugurate other big-ticket projects that grab attention, including the planned launch of Venezuela’s second Chinese-made satellite shortly before the October vote.
But Chavez has warned voters that if they don’t re-elect him, his social programs called “missions” would vanish. That threat, though disputed by Capriles, could have an influence on some in the run-up to the vote.
For the opposition, the primary showed its ability to mobilize voters, a key asset in its efforts to compete with Chavez. Lines formed on Sunday at polling stations in some poor neighborhoods that have traditionally been pro-Chavez strongholds.
“I decided to come to vote to express my complete unhappiness. In these 12 years, the country has gone downhill,” said Ruben Rodriguez, a 59-year-old construction worker who was waiting in line to vote.

EDIE CAMPBELL was given one of the ultimate modelling accolades on Tuesday, when she closed the Chanel spring/summer 2012 couture show – but the experience was nearly all too much.
“Well I didn’t really realise that it was a big deal until I was told by a few people just how important the wedding dress is,” she told us. “And I wasn’t nervous until about two minutes before I had to go on, at which point I nearly did a runner – but I’d probably be a bit obvious sprinting into the distance wearing a wedding dress.”
The “bride” is typically thought to be the most important look of a couture show, and allows the designer to demonstrate their most intricate and impressive techniques – and Campbell fully understood the responsibility of wearing such a dress.
“I’m very flattered and a little confused,” said Campbell of her role. “There were 25 people assigned to making that wedding dress and I had to try to animate all those hours of labour, so in that sense the model is important.”
Currently represented by Viva London, Campbell was suitably impressed by Lagerfeld’s latest Chanel offering, which took blue as its primary theme.
“I’d wear head-to-toe blue every day if it didn’t make me look like a Smurf, so yes, it’s right up my street!” she laughed.
Another Chanel muse and the label’s latest campaign star, Alice Dellal, also offered her praise for the iconic designer.
“He was so nice and so genuine,” she said in an interview for Chanel. “I wasn’t surprised by how genuine and cool he was because you can tell that, but to be able to talk to him and share the same opinions was really nice. [The campaign] was such a good experience – I’ll remember it forever.”

Search resumes at recycling center in Powell case

PUYALLUP, Wash. (AP) C Volunteers sifted through tons of paper at a recycling center Sunday, hoping to find items that Josh Powell may have dumped before killing himself and his two sons in a house fire last week.
The search, involving about 20 people from Pierce County Search and Rescue, was expected to last all day.
“What happened last weekend really affected me. I could see smoke from the home from here,” the recycling center’s manager, Don Taylor, told KOMO News. “It would make me feel good if they found something here that could help answer questions about this whole terrible thing.”
Powell was the husband of missing Utah woman Susan Powell. He attacked his 5- and 7-year-old sons with a hatchet last Sunday, when a social worker brought the boys to his home for what was a supervised visit, and then ignited the house in a gas-fueled inferno.
Some investigators have called the act an admission of guilt in his wife’s death, but they’re still looking for evidence on that front. They also located a storage locker where Powell had stashed a comforter that tested positive for the presence of blood in an initial test. Further lab tests are pending.
Authorities received a tip that Josh Powell may have dumped some papers at the LRI recycling center in the days just before the deaths.
The volunteers arrived Sunday morning and began searching through more than 20,000 pounds of recycled paper, junk mail and newspapers.
A Pierce County sheriff’s officer oversaw the effort.
Susan Powell disappeared Dec. 6, 2009, while the Powells were still living in West Valley City, Utah.
Josh Powell always claimed that on the night his wife disappeared he had taken his young sons on a midnight camping trip in subfreezing temperatures in the Utah desert, and that he knew nothing of her whereabouts.
Less than a month after the disappearance, Powell moved the boys to his father’s home in Puyallup, south of Seattle.
Powell lost custody of his sons to his wife’s parents late last year, after police said they had found child pornography on his father’s computer. He later moved to the home outside Puyallup where he killed his sons Feb. 5.
